By the time the police finished, Meg felt beaten and violated a second time.

Now sitting in the chair behind the counter in the sales room, she snuggled deeper into Quint’s coat, which he’d wrapped around her some time before.

“Let me make sure I have everything,” Humphreys, the first police officer stated for what Meg thought must be the tenth time. “Neither of you got a good look at the intruder?”

“It was dark.” She closed her eyes against the memory.

“No, I was too concerned about getting to my wife,” Quint said at the same time.

“Are you sure you don’t need to be examined by a doctor?” Humphreys looked at Meg, studying her with his too-observant gaze.

“I’m sure.” She wanted to scream that she needed some peace. That she needed a bath to wash off the dirty feeling of some unknown man’s hands on her. That she needed a drink of something—anything—wet and warm that would rinse away the dry, horrible feeling in her throat and warm her frozen insides. Most of all, she wanted to scream.

She’d been so paralyzed with fear that all she’d been able to say through the attack was ‘no.’ And now, she thought if she could just scream, it might relieve some of the pent up terror and frustration trapped within her.

“Do you know of any reason why someone would want to do this?” Humphreys wrote something in the small notebook he held.

“No, but he sent me roses. Or at least he knew about the roses I received yesterday. And he called me on the phone,” she remembered.

Quint sucked in an angry, huffed breath as she explained about the roses and the phone call.

“There were roses delivered to Montgomery Manor for her last night, too, just like those.” He looked at the roses on the counter.

With the excitement of the night, she’d forgotten all about the roses delivered to the Manor.

“You didn’t think there was anything strange about that?” Humphreys looked at them with a scrutinizing glee in his eyes.

“There were several bunches of flowers and plants, even a basket of wine and cheese, sent to the Manor wishing us well for the grand opening last night.” To Meg, Quint’s words sounded strangled, reminding her of a guitar string tightened too tight. With his brows knit together and his pursed lips and his clenched fists when he wasn’t touching or holding her, he looked like a man ready to do battle. She wondered if Humphreys recognized it.

The police moved to inspect the vase. It didn’t take them long to discover there wouldn’t be much of a lead. There wasn’t even anything in them to indicate which florist had supplied them. The card was simple and white, the envelope the same.

“I’ll call the various florist shops in the area and see what I can find out.” Officer Humphreys’ words didn’t assure her in the least.

She’d already known there was nothing on the vase to indicate which florist had supplied them, and she didn’t even remember the young man who had delivered them except the color of his hair.
